Lot Essay
The reference 1680 was the first Submariner to have the date function. The inside of the case back is stamped III.68 indicating it was manufactured in the third quarter of 1968. Submariners from 1968 typically have “Submariner” written in red text on the dial, however it is common to find them with service dials, such as the present example.

The case and bracelet are in good condition with scratches. The case appears to have been polished. The bracelet has stretch. The dial and crystal appear to be a service replacements. The hands appear to be replacements and the seconds hand appears to be relumed. The bezel is missing the pearl. The luminescent material on the dial has developed patina. On the back of the case along the inside edge where the case back attaches appears to be corrosion from rust that could prevent the watch from being completely water tight. This watch has 280 end links with a 78360 bracelet that has an incorrect Rolex clasp without the flip lock. The movement is in working order at the time of cataloging, consistent with the age of the watch. A service is recommended given the age of the watch.
