Lot Essay
Rolex introduced the Submariner reference 6204 in 1953. It was the first reference named "Submariner." The Submariner remains one of the most iconic watches ever produced. The first Submariners look very similar to the Submariners of today however, they have a few distinct differences. The reference 6204 has no crown guards, a chapter ring around the dial, and no depth rating. This watch dates to 1953, but comes with Rolex service paperwork from 1964, which can possibly explain why the dial was relumed and the hands were replaced as was a common practice.
