John's PickDuring the late 19th century, the Swiss continued to produce some of the most exceptional quality complicated watches ever made. Many examples, such as the presently offered lot, were unsigned and made by traditional watchmakers who sold their watches to local retailers. Many of these watches were purchased by affluent travelers on their Grand Tour. The present watch features a massive and heavy gold Swiss case with cuvette, a highly-finished movement, and exceptional hand-painted enamel dial. Highly coveted by collectors today, these early ‘computers’ are appreciated for their beauty, workmanship, and functionality. Besides the useful complication of displaying the day and date factoring in the perpetual calendar cycle, this watch features a chronograph triggered by the button at 12 o’clock as well a minute repeater striking on demand the hours, quarters, and minutes.
