Lot Essay

Heinrich Moser, founder of H. Moser & Cie. was born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland in 1805. Like many purveyors of luxury goods in the 19th century, Heinrich Moser responded to the increasing appetite for luxury goods of Russia’s elite and established H. Moser & Cie in St. Petersburg in 1828. The company experienced great successes during that time, and many of their rare and exquisite pieces could be found on the wrist of Russian royalties, until their business was expropriated during the tumultuous Russian revolution. Production continued in the 1950s in Le Locle with a switch from pocket to wristwatches. Sadly, the company failed to stay in operation because of the quartz crisis in 1979. In 2005, a new Manufacture was built in Schaffhausen and with the help of Dr. Jürgen Lange, the watch manufacturer was given a second chance for greatness in the world of horology. From 2012 to date, the Manufacture is owned by the Meylan family and is an independent, Swiss, family-run business. Their motto is deceptively simple – to manufacture in-house and to make ingenious products. This means that all their movements are produced in-house and every watch is built and finished by hand. In addition, each watch is designed and crafted to perfection, with unique features and often with the incorporation of innovative, yet functional and simple-to-use complications. This strive for perfection results in a very small production which makes H. Moser watches very rare and collectible indeed.
