Lot Essay

Heuer introduced the Monaco reference 1133 in 1969 as part of a line of automatic chronographs. The self-winding chronograph was a completely new innovation at that time. This Monaco reference 1533G was a successor to the 1133G. The 1533 was offered with a metallic grey dial or a blue dial, such as the present example. The Monaco was equipped with an unusual square-shaped case made by Piquerez. Heuer secured an exclusive deal with Piquerez for these cases. Steve McQueen wore a Monaco in the car racing movie “LeMans.” Unappreciated at the time, the Monaco has now become a cult classic with collectors. The interesting case design, rich history, and innovative movement make this watch sought after by collectors and a statement piece.
