Lot Essay

Consigned by a private collector this watch is preserved in close to new overall condition. It is no. 383 of the limited edition of 900 examples launched to celebrate the 700th Anniversary of the Swiss Confederation in 1991. Its case back is engraved with the map of Switzerland.

It is sold with the watch rate certificate from the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres or COSC, holder of the most widely known quality standard in the world of watches. The independent Swiss agency was founded in 1973 to supervise the standardized testing of watch movements for accuracy. Those passing the rigorous tests, such as the present watch, earn the distinction “chronometer”, a formerly general term used for highly accurate timepieces suitable for celestial navigation.

Zenith was founded in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacot in Le Locle, Switzerland. It is one of the Swiss watch manufacturers that still today produce their own movements in-house. The celebrated El Primero caliber was released in 1969 and was one of the first automatic chronograph movements. It beats at a frequency of 36,000 alternations per hour (5 Hz) as opposed to the more common standard frequency of 28,800 (4 Hz), rendering it a greater positional accuracy.
