Lot Essay

This watch is dubbed "The President of Honduras" because in the 1950s this watch belonged to Julio Lozano Diaz, also known as "Don Julio". He served as the president of Honduras from December 5, 1954 to October 21, 1956. During this period in Honduras, there was unrest which led to a military coup. President Julio Lozano Diaz was forced to flee to Miami, Florida.

This watch comes from the son of the pilot that flew the chartered plane that helped President Diaz escape Honduras. President Diaz took the watch off his wrist and gave the watch in gratitude to the pilot. The back of the watch is engraved, "To Don Julio, Sus Ministros, 1955," indicating it was given to Don Julio before he passed it on to the pilot.

The importance of this watch cannot be overstated as it represents the tumultuous history of Honduras in the 20th century.
