Lot Essay

The present timepiece is an extremely interesting window into the early days of self-winding movements. Experiments in this regard date back to the early days of watchmaking. Most notably, Abraham Luis Breguet himself produced 15 self-winding pocket watches, powered by an oscillating platinum weight. Rolex will eventually find the solution which is now universally adopted: the rotor. The present piece, however, offers an interesting alternative approach: the watch is wound by the movement of the hinged lugs at 6 o’ clock.
