Lot Essay
According to the Archives of Blancpain, the present watch was originally sold in June 1998, and underwent servicing in 2008.
The present model is a rare variation of Blancpain tourbillon: the manual calibre 23 was very soon replaced by an automatic movement.
The tourbillon regulator was patented in 1801 by Abraham Louis Breguet. The concept behind it is that if the tourbillon cage revolves on itself, the gravitational disturbances acting on it will contract with each other over the course of the revolution, thus ensuring a more accurate timekeeping. It is without a doubt one of the most ingenious, complex and eye-pleasing complications found in high-end horology. The present watch however features a further evolution of the concept: instead of revolving around its own axis, the tourbillon revolves (or “flies”, hence the name) around an axis outside of the cage.
