Lot Essay

The understated dimension of this piece and its cushion-shape case are telltale signs of watchmaking design from the early 20th century. The appeal of cushion cases started to fade in the 1930s in favour of round cases. The enamel dial adds a layer of appeal and is furthermore blessed with the large Dauphine numerals, another design trait characteristic of that time.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the present piece is remarkable in being arguably one of the very first wristwatches ever produced. Having a timepiece strapped to one's wrist became relatively popular among officiers during WWI (1915-1918) for practical reasons. After the end of the war the custom was made mainstream. The present piece, manufactured in 1918 and sold in 1919, is consequently one of the very first "civilian" wristwatches ever made.
