Lot Essay
The understated dimension of this piece and its cushion-shape case are telltale signs of watchmaking design from the early 20th century. The appeal of cushion cases started to fade in the 1930s in favour of round cases. The enamel dial adds a layer of appeal and is furthermore blessed with the large Dauphine numerals, another design trait characteristic of that time.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the present piece is remarkable in being arguably one of the very first wristwatches ever produced. Having a timepiece strapped to one's wrist became relatively popular among officiers during WWI (1915-1918) for practical reasons. After the end of the war the custom was made mainstream. The present piece, manufactured in 1918 and sold in 1919, is consequently one of the very first "civilian" wristwatches ever made.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The movement is not ticking at the time of cataloguing but analysis of it indicates it is in complete working order, it only needs to be cleaned of the old oil which is no longer fluid. The dial presents a crack at its edge at 6 o’ clock, invisible without removing the bezel. A minor scratch goes from 7 pm toward the center, visible with a loupe under appropriate light condition. The hands lost the luminous material. There may have originally been luminous material on the dial that has since been removed. The case is in good condition, with minor surface scratches. It does not present signs of over polishing. The case back in similar condition bears the engraving: “To, W.J. Hanson, From, J. George Charles”
The condition of lots sold can vary widely due to factors such as age, previous damage, restoration, repair and wear and tear. The nature of the lots sold means that they will rarely be in perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
