Lot Essay

Launched in the 1950s, the GMT was a timepiece designed for pilots. In fact, this model was designed after Pan Am physicians approached Rolex with the request for a watch which would simultaneously display two time zones: the “home” time, in addition to local time. Rolex granted this demand with the ingenious solution of a 24 hours hand combined with a revolving 24 hours bezel: rotating the bezel changes the time zone displayed by the 24 hours hand. The practical second time zone complication and the iconic red and blue bezel made this model one of the most appreciated and recognizable timepieces ever designed and a staple of any serious vintage Rolex collection. The black and red GMT-master bezel is often called the “Coke” or “Coca-Cola” bezel, differentiated from the red and blue GMT-Master bezels often called the “Pepsi” bezel
