Lot Essay

Rolex introduced the reference 5512 in 1959 and it was in production until circa 1980. The 5512 was the first Submariner to feature crown guards. The present example features the highly-desirable “pointed” crown guards and “underline” dial.” Many believe the underline is supposed to refer to the luminous material mixture change from radium to tritium. The combination of “underline” dial with “pointy” crown guards is rare and sought after. This watch features a 5513 case back stamped II.63 indicating it is from the second quarter of 1963, even though the case back is later than the case it is not uncommon to find this combination. The present example also has “ROW” engraved on the movement indicating it was made for the American market. This 5512 is a nice honest example and would be a great addition to a collection.
