Lot Essay
Produced between 1953 and 1960, reference 2526 was the first self-winding wristwatch produced by Patek Philippe. Approximately 3,000 examples were made, the large majority of which were in yellow gold. Approximately 360 examples were made in pink gold. The present example is one of these with several features that make it stand out.
This watch features a first-series, retailer signed dial. First-series dials are characterized by the small dimples that are found at each hour marker. The construction consisted of attaching the hour markers to the dials by setting them with pins. Patek Philippe stopped this practice as many dials were broken in the process and most 2526 enamel dials have the hour markers glued.
Additionally, this watch was retailed by Freccero in Uruguay. The retailer signature can be seen just below the base of the hands and above the sub-seconds dial. Retailer signed dials are highly sought after and collectible. Other Patek Philippe references with Freccero signed dials have sold in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, even in the millions (USD).
This example is offered in very good condition with a period correct 18k pink gold Patek Philippe bracelet. The extract states this watch was born with a leather strap, but it was not uncommon for clients to add a gold bracelet at the time of purchase, if available. The bracelet has the "PP" insignia on the clasp and is signed "Patek Philippe & Co Geneve" on the back of the clasp.
