Lot Essay

Launched in 1932, reference 96 was among the first models of Patek Philippe to be given a reference number: the Stern family had acquired the firm in 1932 and the 1930s were a decade of rationalization of the production. Furthermore, it was a decade that saw the inception of a number of landmark models. The supremely elegant and simple style of the ref. 96 immediately imposes itself as a design masterpiece, one that still echoes more than just subtly in today’s Patek Philippe production.

This particular example was purchased from Gubelin in 1956. It comes with the original receipt that shows it cost $223. Additionally, the original receipt for the 18k gold Gubelin bracelet is present and shows that it was ordered three years later in 1959. Both were delivered to the same address in Great Neck, New York. The watch was originally sold in 1956 on a leather strap. The original certificate is also included.
