Lot Essay
The reference 5441 was made in 1993 to celebrate IWC’s 125th anniversary. The Portuguese Jubilee model was made because of the request of a customer in Portugal in the late 1930s who wanted a wristwatch with the same size and accuracy as a pocket watch. IWC complied with this request and the Portuguese was born with a 42mm case powered by the caliber 74 which was the thinnest and most reliable pocket watch movement at the time. The present example houses the new 9828 movement, which is similar to the caliber 74 except with the addition of shock resistance. This watch features a beautiful silvered dial with hands of pink gold and Arabic hour markers. This model was made in a limited production of 1000 pieces in stainless steel, 500 in pink gold, and 250 in platinum. This is number 581 of 1000 in stainless steel. The Portuguese Jubilee is a classic and iconic watch with timeless style.
