Lot Essay

Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the Reverso in 1931 for British military officers in India who played polo. These polo players had complained about mallets hitting the crystals of their watches and breaking them during play. The Reverso was introduced as a sports watch that would prevent that. This watch had a special case that no other watchmaker had created before. The case is able to "reverse" and flip over in order to protect the crystal. Over the years Jaeger-LeCoultre developed many different variations of the Reverso deviating from the original design that had a blank metal case back to protect the watch. This specific example features dual dials. The front has the time and the reverse side is meant for a second time zone and has day and night indication. In addition to the dual function the dials on both sides are different giving this watch more versatility. The Reverso remains a classic watch with an iconic and important design.
