Fred's Pick The reference 1680 was the first Submariner to feature the date function. This watch features the "Submariner" text in red. The inside of the case back is stamped IV.72 indicating it is from the fourth quarter of 1972. This example features its original bezel that has faded over the years and collectors refer to these as "ghost" bezels. These "red" Submariners are becoming more sought after by collectors.

The case and bracelet are in good condition with scratches throughout. The case back has light nicks and scratches. Behind both sets of lugs have marks from the end links. The sides of the case have light nicks along the edge. The 9 o'clock side has a deeper nick at 10 o'clock. The bracelet has a lot of stretch. The bracelet has two solid oyster links and nine folded links. The dial appears to be original and has spotting throughout. The hands are possibly original and have darkened significantly more than the luminescent material on the dial. The bezel insert appears to be original and has faded and lost its pearl. The crystal is a Rolex "Top hat" replacement. This watch has no. 380 end links and a 9315 bracelet. The movement is in working order at the time of cataloging, consistent with the age of the watch. The movement has not been tested for accuracy. A service is recommended given the age of the watch.
