Lot Essay

Following entry in to World War II, the United States Navy required reliable timekeepers for their expanding fleet. With few chronometers available, the US Navy Observatory issued a challenge to watch makers to design and produce a high grade chronometer that met Navy requirements, including the ability to interchange parts and their immediate availability. This large and heavy clock was issued to the U.S. Navy. The case back is engraved; BUREAU OF SHIPS, U.S. NAVY, 8674-1943, CHRONOMETER WATCH. The dial has easily readable large numerals as well as an as an up/down indicator to show how many hours the watch has run since it was fully wound. The case band has a small safety button, when pushed the time can be set by pulling out the crown, this is so that the time cannot be accidently changed.
