Lot Essay

The legendary diver Jacques Cousteau transformed the Calypso into an expedition ship and base for diving and filming ocean research. In 1996, the Calypso was accidently hit by a barge and sank in the port of Singapore, and subsequently raised and pumped dry before being put in a shipyard. A year later, Jacques Cousteau passed away and the Calypso was then towed to France and spent a number of years in limbo while restoration plans were continuously stopped and started due to legal battles. In 2008, IWC produced this limited edition timepiece to raise proceeds for the restoration of the Calypso, and to celebrate the history between the Cousteau and IWC.
