Lot Essay

Lemania is one of the most highly-regarded chronograph movement makers. Watch companies including Omega and Patek Philippe have used variations of Lemania-based movements. Beginning in the 1940s, Lemania produced military chronographs, particularly for the British forces. Later Lemania produced watches for the Australian, Swedish, and South African militaries. We believe the present model, an uncommon two button chronograph, was produced for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) based on the “M 1612” engraving on the case back. This is the first such Lemania example we have seen and it may have been a test watch for the IDF. The large size, unpolished case, great chronograph movement, and dial style make this an appealing watch to collectors across generations.
