Lot Essay
This Submariner comes from the original owner and was purchased in the 1970s. Worn throughout his life and used as a tool watch, the original bezel fell off at one point. Only after the original owner had Rolex replace the bezel did he find the original. The present watch is thus offered with a replacement bezel as well.
The reference 1680 was the first Submariner to feature the date function. This watch features the "Submariner" text in red. The inside of the case back is stamped III.71 indicating it is from the third quarter of 1971. This example features its original bezel insert with thick font. These "red" Submariners are becoming more sought after by collectors.
