Lot Essay

The Rolex Explorer II debuted in 1971. This watch was meant for explorers, specifically speleologists who needed a tool to help them distinguish between day and night when they are in a cave and have no concept of light or dark. The original Explorer II, reference 1655 was in production until circa 1985 at that time they came out with the reference 16550 which had a new dial, bezel, hands, and movement. The reference 16550 was in production for approximately four years making this a relatively rare reference.
