Lot Essay

During World War II all of Hamilton's production was focused on the war effort and they made many models for the military. This Hamilton open-faced pocketwatch has a central sweep seconds hand and 24 hour dial, meaning it takes a full day for the hour hand to make a full rotation. This specific model was used by aviators to help with navigation. This watch also features a hacking function, meaning when the crown is pulled out the seconds hand stops. This allows the user to set a precise time; essential for synchronizing watches. The dial is signed, "G.C.T" meaning Greenwich Civil Time or Greenwich Mean Time. GCT or GMT typically is considered to be the universal time.
