Lot Essay

Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak in 1972 and it was a game-changer for the luxury watch industry. Based upon a design by Gerald Genta, the Royal Oak was the first luxury steel watch with integrated bracelet. Priced at a level above gold watches, it was a polarizing watch and it was highly uncertain if it would be a success. Since its inception Audemars Piguet would make many variations of the Royal Oak including this mid-size two-tone 36 mm version, which is suitable for both, gentlemen and ladies. The case back of the present watch is engraved No 009, suggesting it was the ninth example made in this configuration.

Tantalum is a rare metal whose color is unlike any other. It is little used in horology because it is extremely difficult to work with. Requiring very high temperatures imposed upon it in order for it to be molded and used to ones specifications, once it has been carefully adapted it is extremely durable and ultra-resistant to corrosion.
