Lot Essay

Associated with many renowned people including J. F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin, the Atmos clock has been favored for decades. It is an iconic model from Jaeger-LeCoultre that is made entirely by hand with elegant forms and traditional craftsmanship. Invented in 1928, Atmos clocks have aimed to achieve the concept of perpetual motion, deriving its energy from the expansion and contraction of a capsule encompassing a mixture of gas and liquid, sensitive to changes in barometric pressure. The capsule being connected to the mechanism of the clock, variations in temperature constantly power the movement without the need of manual winding. As an example, a change of one degree in the range between 15 and 30 degrees centigrade would result in powering the mechanism of the clock for approximately two days of operation. The ‘Atmos Classique’ is a modern variant of the Atmos collection which includes month indication as well as phases of the moon.
