Lot Essay
Patek Philippe introduced the reference 2438/1 in 1952 and it was in production until circa 1963. This model is the water resistant variation of its sister reference, the 2497, which features a screw-back and is .7mm smaller in diameter. The 2497 / 2438 was the world's first perpetual calendar wristwatch with center seconds. Based on the well-known and celebrated caliber 27SC, Patek Philippe upgraded it with a perpetual calendar mechanism underneath the dial and renamed it 27SC-QP, for perpetual calendar. Only 179 examples were made and were reserved exclusively for 2497, 2498, 2438-1, the screw back version. The movement range was reserved to go from 888'000 to 888'178. The present example is fresh to market and comes from a descendent of the original owner.

The dial has scratches around the day aperture, near 7 o'clock and around the moon phase aperture. The day aperture wheel has some smudges on it.
