Few Submariner models fascinate Rolex aficionados as much as the "Big Crown" – a.k.a. “James Bond” -Submariner. A staple of serious Rolex collections, Big Crown Submariners are as charismatic and attractive as they are rare. The present example of a reference 6538 is a from 1957. Emerging from the family of the original owner, this watch was originally owned by Mr. Robert Lawrence Wood, a New York State Police Officer who graduated in 1946 at the 8th Regiment Armory, School of Recruits Police Academy. He retired on October 15, 1966, after 20 years serving the state. This watch accompanied Officer Wood on horseback through the New York streets of the 1950s and 1960s and during its time of service, unfortunately the original bezel insert was lost. However, the watch case and especially the dial are nothing short of impeccable.

Upon first glance, the dial is mesmerizing. The color has aged to a light brown/caramel color, darker moving towards the center. The most notable detail to scholars is however the superb "4-liner" chronometer dial. Whereas most examples of the reference 6538 feature only "200m=660ft" and "Submariner" on the dial, the present watch furthermore states "Officially Certified Chronometer" on two more lines. In addition to its extremely attractive dial and original hands, the case, while with scratches, is seemingly in unpolished condition and the inside of the case back is correctly stamped 6538 and III.57 (reflecting the case was produced in the third quarter of 1957).

Adding to the incredible nature of the lot of this watch is that it includes the original chronometer certificate. For collectors of exceptional sports watches this is a dream.
