ABOUT THE WINE
The wine of Château d'Yquem is somewhat of a miracle. It is due to the serendipitous fusion of a unique terroir, the expertise and unstinting efforts of men and women in the vineyard and cellar, and a microscopic fungus, Botrytis cinerea. Only in this region, and especially at this Château, is this fungus capable of producing a marvellous golden-coloured wine, famous from Moscow to Washington, by way of Seoul, Madrid, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo and beyond. In the autumn, morning mists are followed by sunny afternoons and a slight easterly wind. This encourages the development of noble rot on Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, concentrating sugar and richness. Teams of pickers go over the 100 hectares vineyard with meticulous care, seeking to harvest only the ripest, most botrytised grapes. In order to pick each grape at just the right time, every vineyard plot – indeed, every individual vine – is gone over an average of 6 times in keeping with a method in use since the 19th century.
