ABOUT THE WINE
When the wife of the Baron de Poyferré-Céres bought a portion of the Las Cases property from her sister, Château Léoville-Poyferré was born. During the second half of the 19th-century and the first half of the 20th-century Château Léoville-Poyferré enjoyed a reputation equal to that of its 1st growth brothers, causing Biarnez to remark, "Et je ne comprends pas quel expert inhabile a pu dans les seconds classer le Léoville." Although all three Châteaux bearing the Léoville moniker are classified as second growths, Poyferré, recently, has always seemed to garner the bronze medal for its traditional if somewhat reticent St. Julien expression. Poyferré broke out of its shell with a stupendous effort in the 1990 vintage and has continued its hot streak since. Léoville-Poyferré is a powerfully impressive backwards wine that marries the distinctive qualities of traditional Bordeaux with the quality controls of modern winemaking.
