"The 2012 Second Flight may be the highest scoring second wine I have ever reviewed. A blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, it is completely different from the Screaming Eagle since the latter wine is at least 75% or more Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot with only a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc. The 2012 Second Flight offers up floral, blue and black fruit, mocha and white chocolate characteristics. It possesses full-bodied, silky flavors, and a finish that lasts 50+ seconds. ABOUT THE WINE
Screaming Eagle is likely Napa Valley's smallest winery. The wine made from one acre of vines, just below Dalla Valle, in a small stone winery in Oakville has captured the hearts and attention of wine collectors across the globe. Available only through the mailing list, the elusive, yet legendary Screaming Eagle reaches extraordinary prices based on its cult following. The vines are Cabernet Sauvignon primarily, but Merlot and Cabernet Franc are blended in small amounts. During her tenure winemaker Heidi Barrett used small, half-ton fermenters, plenty of punching down with no fining or filtration to make a concentrated, yet pure version of the fruit. The wine is aged in 65 new French oak barrels in a small cave for almost two years.
