Scott's Pick: By 1978 Warren Winiarski had become the most famous wine maker in the entire United States. His signature Cabernet Sauvignon Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars had just toppled France’s greatest national treasures at Steven Spurrier’s 1976 “The Judgement of Paris!” tasting with only his second vintage, his 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon. By Napa Cabernet Sauvignon standards 1978 is a bit of an island it stands as the only truly great vintage after 1974 (Cask 23’s debut) until the mid-1980s. Even more rare are well kept large formats of the kind before you. To our knowledge this is the only Imperial of 1978 Cask 23 ever to enter the auction market and only four Jeroboams have ever entered the secondary market for this wine. A genuinely rare relic of days gone by.
