Lot Essay

These wall-lights, with draped putto herms issuing candle arms and tapering backplates derive from a drawing by the influential designer Jean-Louis Prieur (c. 1725-c. 1785), see H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, vol. I, Munich, 1986, p. 288, fig. 4.16.1. This successful model had a number of variations as the figure was sometimes female, while other times variations to the candle arms were added, see Christie’s, London, 21 June 2000, lot 233 and Sotheby’s, Paris, 14 September 2017, lot 89, respectively.
