Lot Essay

The ‘coin’ motif used as an allover repeat pattern on this carpet resembles decorative coins or Chinese numismatic charms. Depicting cranes, qilin, lion-dogs, ritual objects and other auspicious symbols, each ‘coin’ appears to be unique. For a carpet with a ‘coin’ repeat centering a lion-dog medallion, please see The Andonian Lion-Dog Medallion and Coins Platform Cover (see Franses, Michael and Waterhouse, Rupert, eds., Lion-dogs Hundred Antiques Classical Chinese Carpets I, London, 2000, pl. 16).
