A design for a console table with similar herm-head capitals to its legs by Dugourc and dated 1789 is illustrated Ulrich Leben, Molitor, London, 1992, p. 95, fig. 86. Both the acanthus pattern on Dugourc's table and the palmette design on this lot were conceived in the goût étrusque style, fashionable in the late eighteenth century. The use of herm figures for legs was an intentional imitation of ancient furniture that became popular during the goût étrusque and reached its popularity during the Empire of the early 1800s.
