Lot Essay

The late 18th century was a golden era for the workshops at Aubusson. Up until then, the commissioning of pile carpets had been the preserve of the King and his royal court. Within ten years of its foundation in 1746, the factory at Aubusson was supplying carpets for export to numerous foreign countries including America at a price that was more affordable than its Savonnerie counterpart (M. Jarry: The Carpets of Aubusson, Leigh-on-Sea, 1969, p. 25). At the same time, the workshops of Aubusson also enjoyed Royal patronage; in 1786 twenty-one Aubusson carpets were recorded in the royal apartments at Versailles.
The present carpet displays elements consistent with other Aubusson pile carpets from the late 18th century such as the floral garlands in the field, however some elements evoke stylistic qualities consistent with the Empire period. The leafy swags in the border and the rinceaux and vine that stretch out to each corner in the field have a similar aesthetic as examples form the early Empire period. A circa 1810 example sold in the Pierre Bergé: From One Home to Another sale at Sotheby’s, Paris, 30 October 2018, lot 142 has related motifs to this example yet are more fully formed.
