The monogram found on the present lot is that of Philadelphian physician James Rush (1 March, 1786 – 26 May, 1869) and his wife Ann Ridgeway, noted Francophile. Dr. Rush was the son of Benjamin Rush and grandson of Richard Stockton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Dr. Rush and his wife occupied a large townhouse at 1914 Chestnut Street, which they furnished with $60,000 of French furniture and at which they gave an annual ball.
These mustard pots were possibly acquired when the couple temporarily moved to Paris in the 1840s, where his brother, Richard, was Ambassador to France. As they bear French export marks, they were subsequently shipped to Philadelphia.
These mustard pots were attributed to Odiot when sold at Sotheby's New York as part of the Keck Collection in 1991.
