Tayler was a leading member of the Newlyn School of artists, along with Frank Bramley and Stanhope Forbes. Together they celebrated the life and customs of this small Cornish fishing village. Dating from 1911, this work exemplifies the Newlyn School's interest circa 1910 in interiors lit only by fire or candlelight.

The surface is stable and the canvas is flat. The canvas has been glue relined. There is scuffing at the extreme left, right, and bottom edges due to frame abrasion. There is an even layer of varnish. Under UV inspection, there are retouches at the extreme right and lower edge to address frame abrasion. There are small areas of retouching in the face of the standing woman, the three children to the left of the tree, and the boy sitting on the girl's lap in front of the tree.
