Lot Essay

Millicent Sowerby (as she was known) was a largely self-taught illustrator, best known for her illustrations of classic children's stories such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and A Child's Garden of Verses, as well as her postcards for children. She was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and artists such as Kate Greenaway, and exhibited regularly at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-Colours (previously the New Water-Colour Society).
