Lot Essay

This watercolour is an illustration for Bee, The Princess of the Dwarfs, by Anatole France and illustrated by Charles Robinson in 1912. The fairy-tale centres on two children, Bee and George, who have been inseparable since childhood. When George is captured by the nymphs at the forbidden lake, they are forced apart for several years and it becomes Bee's responsibility to rescue him. The illustration is of a scene towards the beginning of the story and is accompanied with the caption 'She went to her room, where slept her son George, guarded by waiting women.'
