Edwin Dalton Smith produced plates for various botanical publications by Robert Sweet, including British Flower Garden, 1823-34, Geraniceae, 1820-30, Florist's Guide, 1827-32, and Flora Australasica, 1827-8. He also illustrated Benjamin Maund's Botanic Garden, 1825-51, the original drawings for which are now in the Natural History Museum, London.
The present group were all commissioned from the artist by John Allnutt (1773-1863), a merchant banker and owner of a wine and brandy business. Allnutt had a notable collection of pictures, including works commissioned from Sir Thomas Lawrence and James Ward.
