The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Generally with some scratches, wear and gilt loss throughout, consistent with age and handling. With printed and inscribed Ann and Gordon Getty Collection inventory labels.
Further condition details enumerated below:
The covers: one formerly in several large pieces and repaired, with both fish finials reattached; the other with a large hairline crack beneath one of the fish finials, which has been reattached, and the top of its head restored; the fish finials generally with some small restorations, repairs and small losses to the tips of their fins and tails.
The bodies: one with a large S-shaped hairline crack to the underside; both with prominent intrinsic firing flaws, including a large black spot to the interior of the vase with the hairline, and a filled-in firing crack (approx. 12 in. long) beneath the decoration to the other vase.
The bases: each with a fair amount of loss to the red enamel at its upper edges where the vase rests; one with significant repairs to three of its feet (one of the feet possibly a replacement); the other with a restored chip and two associated long hairline cracks (5 in. and 6 in. long, approx.), the longer meeting a large firing line (in the making) that partially encircles the waist (approx. 1/2 of the circumference).
