Lot Essay

This richly eclectic interior no doubt intrigued Mrs. Getty. Light reflects through a selection of colored glass, displayed on an English gate-legged center table. The sofa and chairs are nevertheless in the French taste. The pier glasses at the end of the room meanwhile are severely neo-classical. Adam made his name painting the interiors of his house in North Berwick, a Scottish seaside town on the English border. His work greatly influenced the interiors of the Scottish Colorist, Francis Cadell.
