Lot Essay

Bright and Co. shared premises with Argand and Co. at 37 Bruton Street, London from about 1805. Bright seems to have taken over the Argand business by around 1825 (Temple Newsam House, 'Country House Lighting 1660-1890', Exhibition Catalogue, 1992, no.72).
A gothic lamp similar to the current two branch lamp, with urn-capped pillar and fretted octagonal plinth, is in the collection at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire and bears the label 'Hancock & Rixon' of Great Marlborough Street (ibid).
