AN ENAMELLED GOLD BOÎTE-À-MINIATURES
19TH CENTURY WITH MARKS RESEMBLING THOSE OF PARIS, 1776-1777
Rectangular with canted corners, the cover, sides, corners and base inset with ten glazed gouache on vellum miniatures painted with seascapes, the gold cagework mounts enamelled with oblong reserves simulating lapis-lazuli alternating with bands of matted gold chased with trailing foliage and flowers enamelled in translucent green and blue, the ionic dividing side pilasters twisted with garlands of leaves, marked inside the rim and on flange

The miniatures on this box are all after paintings by Claude Joseph Vernet (1714-1789) which were widely taken up and adapted by numerous engravers.
Thus the one on the lid is after an engraving by Jean Jacques André Le Veau entitled La Cuisine ambulante des matelots while the one below is after the painting entitled Marine par temps calme. Effet de soleil couchant, painted in 1748 formerly in the Royal Collection of France and today at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille (P 488); That of the rear panel is after an engraving by L. J. Cathelin, entitled La Nuit from the series of over-doors from the Choisy Library, today in the Louvre; that of the left panel is after the engraving by Jean Daullé's widow, La maison de campagne des environs de Naples, after a painting of 1743.

Les miniatures qui ornent cette boîte sont toute inspirées de peintures par Claude Joseph Vernet (1714-1789) et largement reprises et adaptées par de nombreux graveurs.
Ainsi celle du couvercle est d'après une gravure de Jean Jacques André Le Veau intitulée La Cuisine ambulante des matelots alors que celle du dessous est d’après le tableau intitulé Marine par temps calme. Effet de soleil couchant, peint en 1748 autrefois dans la Collection Royale de France et aujourd'hui au Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille (P 488). Celle du panneau arrière est gravée par L. J. Cathelin, intitulée La Nuit, issue de la série de dessus de portes de la Bibliothèque de Choisy, aujourd'hui au Louvre et celle du panneau de gauche est d'après la gravure de la veuve de Jean Daullé, La maison de campagne des environs de Naples, d’après un tableau de 1743.
