Ovale, à double couvercle, d'un côté pour le tabac ou la clé, de l'autre pour le mouvement musical, ciselée sur le couvercle d'un médaillon centré d'un jeune homme jouant de la mandoline et d'une jeune fille assisse écoutant tout en lisant un livre, flanquée de grands enroulements et guirlandes de fleurs sur fond guilloché de filets horizontaux dans une bordure d'oves stylisées, les côtés ciselés d'une frise de médaillons figurant des trophées de musique et des bouquets tenus par un feston de laurier sur un fond de balustrade repercée pour faciliter la résonnance de la musique, le fond similairement repercé et centré d'un médaillon figurant un chérubin devant une vasque dans un jardin, avec clé, joue deux musiques, poinçons dans le couvercle et le fond: maître-orfèvre entre deux petites gerbes de feuilles

HANAU, CIRCA 1785; MAKER'S MARK PMP
Oval, the hinged cover with an oval reserve finely chased with figures playing music in a garden against a matted ground, surrounded by engraved ground applied with chased vari-colour gold floral garlands, the sides with similar oval reserves with love trophies and garden urns joined by green gold festoons and vari-colour gold garlands above an architectural balustrade, pierced for music, the base with similar decoration centering cupid, hinged and pierced, and opening to reveal the 6-bell musical carillon, with fusee movement, playing two tunes, marked in cover and interior with two incuse leaves flanking letters PMP

The hallmark on this music box had been identified in the past as P&M for Piguet et Meylan, a Geneva company specialising in the manufacture of music boxes, automatons and other “toys”. However, the hallmark is in fact ‘PMP’ box and is most certainly that of a goldsmith from Hanau.
Thus it belongs to a small group of high quality boxes, probably made in Hanau between 1760 and 1775, with hallmarks including AP crowned, AP on C crowned, or MP and MP crowned and all within two laurel sprigs similar to our PMP punch.

Hanau experienced an economical boom in the second half of the 18th century to become one of the main centers of Galanteriewaren (small precious objects), whose quality was even praised by Goethe as surpassing that of objects made in Geneva or Paris at the time. (J. W. Goethe, Über Kunst und Altertum in den Rhein und Mayn Gegenden, Erstes Heft, Stuttgart, 1816, p. 114-117).

Although the corpus of goldsmiths is still being identified, the research carried out by Lorenz Seelig published in, Eighteenth Century Hanau Gold Boxes, Silver Society of Canada Journal, 2015 has already revealed the identity of a large group of goldsmiths which include the Toussaint Brothers, Esais Fernau and the Marchand Brothers to name just a few, and to show that although there was some competition between Hanau and Geneva, there was also much trade. It is thus likely that the goldsmiths and jewelers of Hanau purchased the movements for their automatons, music boxes and clocks cases in Geneva, same as for the enamelled plaques set on their snuff boxes. These exchanges also explain that the marriage of the daughter of the famous Geneva box maker Jean George Rémond, with the son of Charles Colin of the prestigious gold box dynasty of Hanau, Colins & Söhne (J. Clarke, “Swiss Snuff Boxes 1785- 1835” in: Emaux du Monde 1700-2000, The Khalili Collections, H. Williams, 2009, p. 298).

This box is therefore not only a magnificent example of watchmaking and goldsmithing but also the evidence of the cultural and commercial exchanges which existed between Geneva and Hanau united against Paris.

Le poinçon de cette boîte à musique avait été identifié par le passé comme étant P&M pour Piguet et Meylan, compagnie genevoise spécialisée dans la fabrication de boîtes à musique, automates et autres ‘jouets’. Pourtant le poinçon frappé sur cette boîte ‘PMP’ est bien celui d’un orfèvre de Hanau.
Ainsi elle appartient à un petit groupe de boîtes de grande qualité, probablement fabriquées à Hanau entre 1760 et 1775, qui portent des poinçons incluant AP couronné, AP sur C couronné, ou MP et MP couronné, chacun entourés de brins de feuilles dans le même style que sur notre poinçon PMP et que l’on peut ajouter à ce groupe de poinçons de Hanau.

Hanau connut dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle un incroyable essor pour devenir l'un des principaux centres de Galanteriewaren (petits objets précieux), dont la qualité fut même vantée par Goethe comme dépassant celle des objets fabriqués à Genève ou à Paris à l'époque. Bien que le corpus des orfèvres est encore en cours d’identification, les recherches de Lorenz Seelig publiées dans, Eighteenth Century Hanau Gold Boxes, Silver Society of Canada Journal, 2015 ont permis déjà de révéler l’identité d’un groupe important d’orfèvres qui inclut les frères Toussaint, Esais Fernau et les Frères Marchand pour n’en citer que quelques-uns, et de montrer que même s’il existait une certaine concurrence entre Hanau et Genève, il y a avait aussi de nombreux échanges. Ainsi il est tout à fait probable que les orfèvres et bijoutiers de Hanau achetaient les mouvements de leurs automates, boîtes à musique et horloges à Genève, tout comme les plaques émaillées que l’on fixait sur les tabatières. Ces échanges expliquent d’ailleurs le mariage de la fille du célèbre fabriquant de boîtes genevois Jean George Rémond, avec le fils de Charles Colin de la prestigieuse dynastie des boîtes en or de Hanau, Colins & Söhne (J. Clarke, « Swiss Snuff Boxes 1785-1835 » dans : Emaux du Monde 1700-2000, The Khalili Collections, Haydn Williams, 2009, p. 298).
Cette boîte est donc non seulement un magnifique exemple d’horlogerie et d’orfèvrerie mais aussi le témoin incontestable des échanges culturels et commerciaux qui existaient entre Genève et Hanau, unies dans la concurrence contre Paris.
