Rectangular, the cover chased with vari-color gold scrolling foliage against a matted ground, the oval hinged flap enamelled with a scene of a Royal Barge in Constantinople with the Sublime Porte in the background, surrounded by a band of split pearls and opening to reveal a solid grille engraved with trellis and enclosing a singing bird, the sides and base with engine-turned panels within vari-color gold borders of chased scrolling foliage, the singing bird moving its head and flapping its wings, the back with hinged key compartment, movement marked FR in oval and 446

The brothers François-Elisée, Frédéric and Samuel-Henri Rochat worked in Geneva from 1800 to 1835. They trained in their father's workshop Pierre Rochat in Le Brassus, then worked as watchmakers at Jaquet-Droz and Leschot before setting their own business in Geneva. They became one of the largest manufacturers of singing bird movements and automata watches which they also supply to other manufacturers, notably Jaquet-Droz and Leschot. They are known to have perfected the singing bird movement by adding more cams, thus making the bird's movements more natural, and for improving sound quality through the use of piston rods.
Their pieces were often enhanced with pearls and precious stones and decorated with enameled scenes created by famous artists such as Isaac Adam, Jean-Abraham Lissignol, Jean-François-Victor Dupont and Jean-Louis Richter. Among their most famous pieces are a pair of singing bird guns sold at Christie's in Hong Kong, on May 20, 2011, lot 2174 and a birdcage with singing bird including that of the Duke of Sussex sold at Christie's London on December 13 2000, lot 87.
The quality of their pieces and the complexity of their movements attracted them an international clientele in Europe, China and the Ottoman Empire. Many of their objects can now be found in the Imperial Palace in Beijing but also in the most prestigious museums and private collections in the world, notably the Museum of Watchmaking and Enameling and the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva, the Edouard and Maurice Collection Sandoz.

Les frères François-Elisée, Frédéric et Samuel-Henri Rochat travaillent à Genève de 1800 à 1835. Ils font leur apprentissage dans l’atelier de leur père Pierre Rochat au Brassus, puis travaillent comme horlogers chez Jaquet-Droz et Leschot avant de s'installer à leur compte à Genève pour devenir l’un des plus grands fabricants de mouvements d'oiseaux chanteurs et de montres à automates qu'ils fournissent également à d'autres fabricants, notamment Jaquet-Droz et Leschot. Ils sont connus pour avoir perfectionné le mécanisme de l'oiseau chanteur par l’ajout d’un plus grand nombre de cames, rendant ainsi les mouvements de l'oiseau plus naturels, et pour avoir amélioré la qualité du son grâce à l'utilisation de tiges de piston.

Leur pièces étaient souvent rehaussées de perles et de pierres précieuses et décorées de scènes émaillées souvent réalisées par des artistes célèbres tels qu'Isaac Adam, Jean-Abraham Lissignol, Jean-François- Victor Dupont et Jean-Louis Richter. Parmi leurs pièces les plus célèbres figurent une paire de pistolets à oiseaux chanteurs vendues chez Christie’s à Hong Kong, le 20 mai 2011, lot 2174 et une cage à oiseau chanteur dont celle du duc de Sussex a été vendue à Londres le 13 décembre 2000, lot 87.
