The miniature set on this snuff-box is based on a miniature by Jean Petitot (1607-1691) now kept at the Royal Collection Trust (RCIN 421383) in London. It is one of thirteen enamel portraits of Louis XIV made by Petitot and preserved in the royal collection. This portrait dates from around 1660 and shows the king as a young sovereign.
Petitot was born in Geneva where he began his apprenticeship in his uncle's goldsmith's workshop, Jean Couronne, before joining the workshop of the enamel painter, Pierre Bordier. It was during his travels that he entered the court of Charles I who gave him lodging in Whitehall until the civil war forced him to flee to France where, preceded by his reputation, Louis XIV gave him the title of Painter to the King and housed him in the Galeries du Louvre. Then began Petitot's period of glory, whose fineness of execution and palette of colors were particularly appreciated at the French court, which granted him patronage until the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685), when as a Protestant, he was forced to return to Geneva.
Petitot's work continued to be much admired by collectors for more than 150 years after his death and his portraits were copied by enamellers, undoubtedly at the request of a clientele fond of his work and of a glorious past.

La miniature qui orne cette tabatière est d’après une miniature par Jean Petitot (1607-1691) aujourd’hui conservée à la Royal Collection Trust (RCIN 421383) à Londres, un des treize portraits sur émail de Louis XIV réalisés par Petitot et conservés dans la collection royale. Ce portrait date d'environ 1660 et montre le souverain jeune.

Petitot est né à Genève où il commence son apprentissage dans l'atelier d'orfèvrerie de son oncle Jean Royaume avant de rejoindre l’atelier du peintre sur émail, Pierre Bordier. C’est au cours de ses voyages, qu’il entre à la cour de Charles Ier qui lui donne un logement à Whitehall. Néanmoins la guerre civile l’oblige à partir en France où, précédé par sa réputation, Louis XIV lui donne le titre de Peintre du Roi et le loge aux Galeries du Louvre. Commence alors la période de gloire de Petitot, dont la finesse d’exécution et la palette de couleurs étaient particulièrement appréciés à la cour de France, qui lui accorde son mécénat jusqu'à la révocation de l'Édit de Nantes (1685), date à laquelle, en tant que protestant, il fut contraint de retourner à Genève.
La réputation de Petitot perdurera pendant encore plus de 150 ans après son décès et ses portraits seront repris par les émailleurs sans doute à la demande d’une clientèle friande d’un passé glorieux.
