Circulaire formée de panneaux en pierres dures, sur le couvercle et le fond quatre panneaux en agate striée encadrant une réserve circulaire et séparés par des filets en or, les côtés du couvercle et de la base appliqués de seize bandes en pierres dures incluant jaspe, agate, chrysoprase, labradorite et lapis-lazuli, chacune numérotée sur le bord intérieur du couvercle, les montures en or gravées d'une frise végétale sur fond sablé, poinçons sur le bord intérieur du couvercle et la gorge: millésime, maître-orfèvre et contrôle Autriche-Hongrie 1806-1823

AN AUSTRIAN GOLD-MOUNTED HARDSTONE BONBONNIERE

Circular, the base and cover set with four panels of cross-cut agate panels divided by gold stripes and centred by small agate disks, the sides set with sixteen various hardstone panels numbered on the gold mount inside the cover, the outer gold mounts chased with foliate border on sable ground, marked inside the cover rim and on flange: date, maker and Austro-Hungarian control mark 1806-1823

Johann Georg Aigner worked in Vienna from 1789 to 1820 as a lapidary and goldsmith. Following in the footsteps of he Dresden court jeweler, Johann Christian Neuber, whose snuff-boxes and other gallantries had seduced all of Europe, he began to make hardstone mosaic snuff-boxes in the same style, either in several stones or more simply in a single stone.

Johann Georg Aigner travaille à Vienne de 1789 à 1820 probablement comme lapidaire et orfèvre. Profitant du succès du bijoutier de la cour de Dresde, Johann Christian Neuber, dont les tabatières et autres galanteries ont séduit toute l’Europe, il se met à fabriquer des tabatières dans le même style, c’est-à-dire soit en mosaïque de plusieurs pierres ou plus simplement dans une seule pierre.
