Rectangular, the base, sides and hinged cover chased with panels of engine-turning bordered by foliate scrolls and anthemion, the cover chased with a border of trailing foliage enclosing an enamelled scene of Dresden, marked in base: maker, with later French control marks

Johann Daniel Berneaud (1773-1861), originally from Hanau, worked as an enamel painter in his hometown as well as in Geneva. He joined forces for a time with another enameler, Antoine Carteret, and both are named in Johann Wolfgang Goethe's 'Voyages on the banks of the Rhine, Maine and Neckar' 1814-1815 in the chapter on Hanau: 'Painting on enamel is executed by Carteret and Berneaud, who both deserve the title of artist'. The enamelled view on the cover is after a painting by Bernardo Bellotto (1721-1780) dated 1748 showing the Katholische Hofkirche.
Berneaud worked for several gold box makers including Charles Collins and Söhne with whom he collaborates regularly. We also know of other views of towns in northern Europe including that of Kronborg Castle offered here under lot 87.

Johann Daniel Berneaud (1773-1861), originaire de Hanau, travaille comme peintre sur émail dans sa ville natale ainsi qu'à Genève. Il s'associe un temps avec un autre émailleur, Antoine Carteret, et tous les deux sont nommés dans 'Les Voyages aux bords du Rhin, Maine et Neckar' de Johann Wolfgang Goethe, 1814-1815 dans le chapitre sur Hanau: 'La peinture sur émail est exécutée par Carteret et Berneaud, qui méritent tous deux le titre d'artiste'. Cette vue de la cathédrale de Dresde (Katholische Hofkirche) est d'après un tableau de Bernardo Bellotto (1721-1780) daté de 1748.
